Dispelling Myths About Priestcraft—The True Path of Discipleship
Uncover the truth about priestcraft and how it differs from true discipleship, as you align your life with God’s purposes.
The Call to Be a Light
The Savior declared:
"Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid." (3 Nephi 12:14)
To follow Christ is to shine His light—to lead, to serve, and to uplift. Yet, misunderstandings about what it means to prosper while serving can cloud our ability to build Zion. False accusations of priestcraft often arise when people equate teaching correct principles or receiving support for righteous work with self-serving intent. But priestcraft and discipleship couldn’t be more different.
Dispelling the Myths About Priestcraft
The Book of Mormon defines priestcraft with clarity:
"Priestcrafts are that men preach and set themselves up for a light unto the world, that they may get gain and praise of the world; but they seek not the welfare of Zion." (2 Nephi 26:29)
Priestcraft is real, and it is a dangerous distortion of sacred work. It twists service into a tool for personal gain and glory. The key lies in intent: are you building Zion, or are you elevating yourself? True discipleship always seeks the welfare of others, shining His light to point them to God. Priestcraft, by contrast, seeks personal praise and worldly rewards, cutting itself off from God’s blessings.
False accusations of priestcraft often stem from misunderstanding or jealousy. A victim or mediocre mindset may look at someone prospering through righteous means—such as teaching correct principles—and cry, "He’s selling the gospel!" But the Lord’s plan for His disciples is to prosper with purpose, using their abundance to bless others and build His kingdom.
The Contrast of Priestcraft and Discipleship
Christ commands us to do greater works than He did (John 14:12). This is not about elevating ourselves above Him but about fulfilling our divine potential as His disciples.
Jacob taught:
"Before ye seek for riches, seek ye for the kingdom of God. And after ye have obtained a hope in Christ ye shall obtain riches, if ye seek them; and ye will seek them for the intent to do good." (Jacob 2:18-19)
True discipleship turns the heart outward. Disciples seek to build Zion by uplifting others, consecrating their talents, and glorifying God. By contrast, priestcraft turns the heart inward, focusing on personal gain and recognition at the expense of others.
Priestcraft whispers, "Protect what you have. Look out for yourself." Discipleship invites, "Give freely. Lift others. Trust in God’s abundance." The difference lies in the intent of the heart.
Practical Steps to Avoid Priestcraft and Embrace Discipleship
1. Check Your Intent: Regularly examine your motives. Are you seeking to glorify God and bless others, or are you focused on personal gain? Align your heart with His will.
2. Seek the Welfare of Zion: Use your talents to lift others. Whether teaching, creating, or serving, let your efforts build the kingdom of God.
3.Trust in Righteous Prosperity: Understand that prospering through righteous means is not priestcraft. Seek wisdom, align with divine principles, and trust God to magnify your efforts.
4. Reject the Victim Mentality: Resist the temptation to judge others unfairly. Instead, celebrate their success and look for ways to grow and learn from their example.
5. Serve With Love: Every act of discipleship—no matter how small—reflects His light. Seek to serve with humility and joy, trusting God to guide your path.
Reflection
Priestcraft is about self-interest and personal glory. Discipleship is about selflessness and building Zion. The decision is yours: will you align your heart with God’s purposes and let His light shine through you? As you reflect on this, consider how your actions and intent align with His call to discipleship.
