Learning Yourself—The Key to Knowing God and Others

Discover the profound connection between self-discovery, understanding others, and drawing closer to God.

The Call to Know Yourself

In Henry Van Dyke’s timeless story The Mansion, we meet John Weightman, a wealthy man who believes his grand contributions to society have earned him a magnificent place in heaven. Yet, when he dreams of entering the heavenly realms, he is shocked to find only a small, humble mansion built for him. Why? Because his good deeds were done with selfish motives rather than pure intent. Weightman awakens from the dream with a new understanding: true greatness comes from giving with humility and love.

Van Dyke’s story teaches a powerful lesson. Life allows us to make mistakes, to stumble and rise again, learning as we go. This journey of trial and error helps us become the masters of our own lives, shaping our character and refining our purpose. However, wisdom invites us to go further: to learn not only from our own missteps but also from the experiences of others.

Books, like The Mansion, offer a treasure trove of insights. They inspire us, guide us, and teach us what to do—and what not to do. But not all books are created equal. Seek out books that lift and inspire, that point you to truth and help you align with God’s will. In doing so, you gain the tools to navigate life’s challenges with clarity and purpose.

Brigham Young’s wisdom underscores this point: “The greatest lesson you can learn is to learn yourselves. When we learn ourselves, we learn our neighbors. When we know precisely how to deal with ourselves, we know how to deal with our neighbors.” Self-discovery is not only about understanding who you are but also about learning your divine potential and how to lift others around you.

The Key to Self-Discovery

Joseph Smith taught, “If men do not comprehend the character of God, they do not comprehend their own character.” To truly know yourself, you must come to know God. Without this understanding, life becomes a cycle of mere existence—eating, drinking, sleeping—like the brute beasts that know nothing of divine purpose. But when you seek to understand God, His character, and His designs, you unlock the meaning of your own life.

This connection is crucial. As you learn about God, you gain clarity about your role in His plan. You begin to see yourself as He sees you—a being of infinite worth with the capacity for greatness. This understanding transforms not only how you view yourself but also how you view others.

Brigham Young reminds us: “No being can thoroughly learn himself, without understanding more or less of the things of God.” Self-discovery and God-discovery are intertwined. The more you align your life with divine principles, the more you grow in love, wisdom, and strength.

Practical Steps for Self-Discovery

1. Read with Purpose: Seek out books that inspire and teach timeless truths. Let them guide your thoughts and actions toward light and truth.

2. Reflect Daily: Spend time each day in quiet reflection. Ask yourself, “What did I learn about myself today?”

3. Learn from Others: Observe the experiences of those around you. Gain wisdom from their successes and failures.

4. Seek Divine Guidance: Pray to God for understanding. Let the Holy Ghost reveal your strengths and help you see your divine potential.

5. Serve with Intent: As you lift others, you discover more about your own gifts and how to use them for good.

Closing Reflection

Self-discovery is a sacred journey that brings you closer to God and others. Like polishing a stone until it reflects light, this process reveals your divine nature and potential. This week, ask yourself: What am I learning about my relationship with God, and how can I use this understanding to serve others? Let your efforts refine you and bless those around you, building Zion one step at a time.
